Sports Purpose
🇬🇧 Bicester, Oxfordshire · United Kingdom
Bicester Heritage dealer and advisory that also builds the Sports Purpose 911, a short-wheelbase road-racer at one or two cars a year.
Sports Purpose is James Turner’s Oxfordshire operation, a classic Porsche garage in the broadest sense: sales, sourcing, storage, research and advisory work from Bicester Heritage, alongside the 2 Litre Cup historic race series he also developed. The name comes from Porsche’s 1968 document on preparing 911s for competition, the catalogue that produced the T/R and S/T road racers, and the company’s own car sets out to distil that era. Known as 545 for its chassis number, the 545th 911 built, the 1965 car carries a 2.2-litre twin-plug flat-six developed from Tuthill’s 2 Litre Cup engines, on Weber carburettors rather than mechanical injection, giving about 200bhp and 160lb ft at roughly 1,000kg. Richard Tuthill handled powertrain and chassis, Sportwagen the shell and paint, O’Rourke Trimmers the Connolly hide cabin, with a dashboard cut from timber salvaged at Bicester. One or two cars a year is the stated ceiling.
